About the State of Alaska
Alaska (from the Aleut word alaxsxaq understood to mean “the mainland” or literally, “the object towards which the action of the sea is directed”) became the 49th state of the United States on January 3, 1959 during the time of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The state was originally purchased from the Russians on March 30, 1867 for $7.2 million ($120 million equivalent in today’s dollar).
It is the largest state in the Union by land area measuring 663,268 square miles or 1,717,854 square kilometers located in the northwestern corner of North America. It shares an international boundary with Canada to the east, with the Arctic and Pacific Oceans to the north and west/south respectively.
While Alaska is the biggest state by land area, it is also among the least populated with most Alaskans living in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau (the state capital). Other large cities are Sitka, Ketchikan, and Wasilla. Alaska’s main industries and the source of employment for most of the population are oil, natural gas, and fishing.
