Currently Non-Collectible Example
SITUATION:
A man called us because he was receiving threatening notices from the IRS for $31,185. He tried to solve it on his own, but the IRS would not explore a resolution due to his not being in tax compliance. His taxes due were from unpaid balances from the years 2004, 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2012. He also had lottery winnings and was not aware that it was enough to file.
INVESTIGATION PHASE:
A power of attorney was completed to give our tax professional permission to speak with the IRS and help solve the issue. An immediate stay of enforcement was requested and granted. Master tax files were pulled as well as tax transcripts. The client’s financials were gathered and organized into the proper forms. Bank statements, letters, correspondence, and other information were reviewed and analyzed. The tax professional discovered that the total tax balance that was outstanding was $31,358.75.
The tax professional reviewed client’s financial situation, transcripts, and history. Compliance work of tax preparation was needed for a missing return for 2010.
COMPLIANCE PHASE:
The tax professional filed form 1040 for the client for the year 2010. Once the return was processed, and the client’s financial situation was reviewed again, it was determined that the client appeared to qualify for as “Currently Non Collectible.”
RESOLUTION PHASE:
During the collection hold period, the client decided to proceed with the Resolution Phase of the program. The tax professional contacted the IRS to set up the Currently Non-Collectible resolution.
