Credit Card Payoff Calculator
Credit Card Payoff Calculator
See how long a balance takes to clear and what it costs in interest, or the payment needed to be debt-free by a target. Enter a monthly payment, a target number of months, or both. Nothing is stored.
Estimate assumes a fixed rate and no new charges. Real cards compound daily and rates can change.
How credit card payoff works
Each month, interest is charged on your balance, and whatever is left of your payment after interest reduces the principal. Early on, most of a small payment goes to interest, which is why a high balance at a high rate can take years to clear. The calculator shows the payoff time and total interest for a payment you choose, or the payment needed to be debt-free by a target date.
The minimum-payment trap
Paying only the minimum, usually a small percentage of the balance, can stretch a payoff across a decade or more and multiply the total interest. Even a modest increase above the minimum shortens the timeline and cuts interest sharply, because more of each payment reaches the principal.
When payoff is out of reach
If no realistic payment clears the balance in a reasonable time, that is a signal to look at other paths. A consolidation loan can lower the rate, a debt management plan can reduce interest through a nonprofit, and debt settlement negotiates the balance down, with trade-offs for credit and possible taxes. Comparing them against your real numbers is the point of a free review.
How this calculator works
This tool applies standard amortization month by month: each month interest is charged on the balance and the rest of your payment reduces the principal. Given a payment, it counts the months to reach a zero balance and totals the interest; given a target date, it solves for the payment. If a payment is at or below the monthly interest, the balance never falls, which the tool reports rather than looping forever.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to pay off my credit card?
It depends on your balance, interest rate, and monthly payment. At the minimum, a high-rate balance can take well over a decade. The calculator on this page shows the exact months and total interest for the payment you enter, or the payment needed to be debt-free by a target date.
How much interest will I pay on my credit card?
Interest is charged monthly on your balance, so the total depends on how fast you pay it down. The longer the payoff, the more interest you pay. Increasing your monthly payment reduces both the time and the total interest, often dramatically.
What payment do I need to pay off my card by a certain date?
Enter your balance, rate, and a target number of months, and the calculator solves for the monthly payment that clears the balance in that time using standard amortization.
Why does paying the minimum take so long?
Minimum payments are usually a small percentage of the balance, so early on most of the payment goes to interest and the principal barely moves. That is what stretches payoff across many years and inflates the total interest.
What if I cannot afford a payment that pays it off?
If no realistic payment clears the balance in a reasonable time, options like a consolidation loan, a debt management plan, or debt settlement may help. Each has trade-offs, and a free, no-obligation review can compare them against your situation.
